MMDA Register & forms

The Miniature Donkey Stud Book of the UK is the only register created solely for the Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys in this country and was opened several years ago to ensure the purity of this special breed of donkey in Great Britain.

The Stud Book has three sections: ID Register: General Register and Studbook Register.

The vast majority of the Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys in the UK are recorded within our Stud Book. We are able to investigate the ancestry of donkeys registered with us and frequently provide pedigrees of at least 3 generations and sometimes ancestry dating back to the first imports into the USA in 1929. Some of the donkeys registered with us have over 400 traceable recorded ancestors. This information is vital for improving the breed and avoiding inadvertent in-breeding. It is therefore also important that all new foals are registered to record their lineage for future years.

Miniature donkeys (within the 36″ height specification) but with only one generation of recorded pedigree may also be registered in our general register, and their offspring upgraded over two generations. This is in fact just as important to ensure future generations can be monitored so that their Miniature Mediterranean status can be proven.

GRASSROOTS - ONLINE REGISTRY

The MMDA Stud Book is held in Grassroots, a comprehensive and interactive online Registry where members can view all registered donkeys and carry out a number of transactions, including transfers and registrations.  All members have full access to Grassroots.  If you are a paid-up member of the MMDA and are not able to access the system, please email the Registrars who will be happy to help you.

Basic instructions on how to navigate Grassroots can be found here:

Grassroots help

The Miniature Mediterranean Donkey Association maintains the only register (Stud Book) created solely for Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys in the UK.  At birth, all eligible donkeys are registered with the MMDA as foals and will remain so until they reach their third birthday.  They will be issued with a foal certificate.

At 3 years old, the donkey should be upgraded (no fee payable).  If breeding stock, they should be veterinary inspected at the time of upgrading.

At upgrading, they would enter one of three MMDA registers within the overall Stud Book:

  • Identification Register (ID)
  • General Register (G)
  • Stud Register (SB)

Identification Register (ID) -

  • Donkeys that have grown over 36” or have failed to achieve minimum height of 29" (min. height applies from 1st June 2026)
  • Donkeys with any common ancestors in previous three generations (parents, grandparents or great-grandparents)
  • Any donkey with an unregistered parent

PLEASE NOTE: Donkeys in the ID register will remain in the ID register for their lifetime but it is possible for their progeny to enter the General Register if they then meet the criteria at 3 years of age.

General Register (G) -

  • Donkeys with less than 3 generations in their pedigree (grading up)
  • Geldings
  • Donkeys eligible for Stud Register but not yet vet inspected
  • Donkeys who meet Stud Book criteria but whose sire is not in the Stud Register and veterinary inspected

Stud Register (SB) -

  • Foundation donkeys pre 2003.
  • Donkeys with a 3-generation pedigree – no missing entries
  • Sire must be SB and veterinary-inspected
  • All donkeys must be veterinary inspected and confirmed as free of hereditary faults to enter the Stud Register

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

  • With effect from 5/11/25, ALL donkeys (male or female) must have passed a veterinary inspection in order to enter the Stud Book.
  • From 1st April 2026, any foal CONCEIVED before either parent was veterinary inspected will be ineligible to enter the Stud Book at any point.
